Everett and the Born Rule
نویسنده
چکیده
During the last ten years or so, derivations of the Born rule based on decision theory have been proposed and developed, and it is claimed that these are valid in the context of the Everett interpretation. This claim is critically assessed and it is shown that one of its key assumptions is a natural consequence of the principles underlying the Copenhagen interpretation, but constitutes a major additional postulate in an Everettian context. It is further argued that the Born rule, in common with any interpretation that relates outcome likelihood to the expansion coefficients connecting the wavefunction with the eigenfunctions of the measurement operator, is incompatible with the purely unitary evolution assumed in the Everett interpretation.

A formal proof of the Born rule from decision-theoretic assumptions
I develop the decision-theoretic approach to quantum probability, originally proposed by David Deutsch, into a mathematically rigorous proof of the Born rule in (Everett-interpreted) quantum mechanics. I sketch the argument informally, then prove it formally, and lastly consider a number of proposed “counter-examples” to show exactly which premises of the argument they violate. (This is a preli...
متن کاملDecision-based Probabilities in the Everett Interpretation: Comments on Wallace and Greaves∗
It is often objected that the Everett interpretation of QM cannot make adequate sense of quantum probabilities, in one or both of two senses: either it cannot make sense of probability at all, or cannot explain why probability should be governed by the Born rule. David Deutsch has attempted to meet these objections. He argues not only that rational decision under uncertainty makes sense in the ...

It is often objected that the Everett interpretation of QM cannot make sense of quantum probabilities, in one or both of two ways: either it can’t make sense of probability at all, or it can’t explain why probability should be governed by the Born rule. David Deutsch has attempted to meet these objections. He argues not only that rational decision under uncertainty makes sense in the Everett in...
متن کاملEverettian rationality: defending Deutsch’s approach to probability in the Everett interpretation
An analysis is made of Deutsch’s recent claim to have derived the Born rule from decisiontheoretic assumptions. It is argued that Deutsch’s proof must be understood in the explicit context of the Everett interpretation, and that in this context, it essentially succeeds. Some comments are made about the criticism of Deutsch’s proof by Barnum, Caves, Finkelstein, Fuchs, and Schack; it is argued t...
متن کاملOn the Everett Programme and the Born Rule
Proponents of the Everett interpretation of Quantum Theory have made efforts to show that to an observer in a branch, everything happens as if the projection postulate were true without postulating it. In this paper, we will indicate that it is only possible to deduce this rule if one introduces another postulate that is logically equivalent to introducing the projection postulate as an extra a...
